Fall hair loss: is it normal?

by | 5 October 2021

For many people, fall is a time of annual concern. The sight of many hairs on the brush or comb arouses a feeling of powerlessness. The PAI Medical Group demystifies for you the different causes of fall hair loss, enabling you to consider whether a consultation with a PAI Medical Group specialist is necessary.

DOES HAIR FALL OUT MORE IN AUTUMN?

The answer is yes, and you’re probably not alone in your quest to understand why this happens! The hair follicle cycles continue throughout the months, and you can easily track them through the seasons. The equinoxes (spring and fall) are telogen (loss) phases, while the solstices (summer and winter) are anagen (growth) phases.

WHAT ARE THE OTHER CAUSES OF FALL HAIR LOSS?

Fall hair loss may seem more alarming at times because beyond the cyclical factor. Other “stresses” are involved. When you return from vacation, the accelerated pace of life and the pressure of getting back to work are felt and can cause increased hair loss.

The summer sun, the pool’s chlorinated water, and the summer season’s excesses (diet, unbalanced sleep cycle, etc.) can also lead to hair loss when fall knocks on our door.

CAN WEATHER CHANGE AFFECT MY HAIR?

Good news! There is no connection between the cold and windy weather and hair loss. However, winter temperatures bring constant temperature fluctuations; we shock our bodies from heated interiors to the cold outside.

And strangely enough, it is indoors that hair loses the battle, suffering from dehydration due to “inadequate” heating and overheating.

The hair then becomes dull and brittle and is subjected to relentless temperature variations. It is essential to use products to hydrate your hair and protect it from the cold by wearing a hat to prevent this.

FALL HAIR LOSS: SHOULD YOU BE CONCERNED?

Although hair loss is not generally alarming, you should keep in mind one figure: 100 hairs per day. If you are losing more than this number of hairs per day, PAI Medical Group invites you to make an appointment at a clinic near you. Our professionals will listen to your needs and guide you to the best solution, regardless of your hair loss cause(s).
